On digital gardening, or why I'm writing here

I’m not a natural writer or a person that left notes on its own thoughts. But I’m trying to change that. I want to start documenting some projets that never make it out of my mind (hopefully this will help), what I learn along the way and even some article for myself about complex topics I find interesting so I can get a better understanding of them. And as a side bonus, improve my writing skills in English (it is not my first language).

I want to explore a concept I have seen around the internet: digital gardening.

What’s a digital garden?

I think this romantic name is intended as a metaphor. Something that no one except yourself ever sees (except if you have a house garden with views from the street, I guess), where you put some effort into making things grow and look nice (or just nice enough for you to enjoy it).

This way you can later reflect on what you have done and what you have learned.

What I’ll write about

A few categories I already have in mind:

Side projects. I have many ideas for side projects, but I never finish them (most of the time I don’t even start them). Writing about them here might help me get some more focus.

Mathematics and computer science. I have studied a dual degree in Mathematics and Computer Science, and I have a genuine interest in the theory. However, work and adult life have made it difficult to dedicate time to it. I am planning to write some short notes on topics to refresh my memory and learn new things.

Why public?

I’m an introvert, but I think having my thoughts and writings public will help me with a couple of (antagonistic) things:

  • If I think that someone else could read this, I’ll put more effort into what I write.
  • I care too much about what others think of me, so this is a way to practice not caring that much about it (even if this is the same principle that makes me put more effort into what I write… Hopefully, writing quality won’t suffer too much).

To anybody other than myself reading this, I’m not writing for you, sorry.
